Spring into STEM @ Fremont Main Library
We were given the wonderful opportunity to conduct TAU sessions at the Fremont Main Library (branch of Alameda County Libraries). With a younger audience, we discussed a variety of topcis and were able to perform enthralling experiments.
On Day 1, we discussed atoms and electricity, and then made series and parallel circuits to power various small devices.
Going off on our discussion on atoms on Day 1, we talked about bonds (covalent, ionic, metallic) and ions in Day 2. Our experiment had us looking like mad scientists and we investigated how differnt materials conduct static electricity, resulting in repulsion forces.
Lastly, on Day 3, we moved forward from atoms and molecules and briefly discussed waves and delved deeper into sound waves. We then explored magnetism and how speakers actually work, combining electromagnetism and a pulsating diaphragm to create sound. The experiment for Day 3 was to create an actual speaker using just a Dixie cup, copper wire, and a couple of magnets! The students got to hear "Old McDonald" through their newly made inventions.
Thank you to everyone who stayed with us through this wonderful journey and to Fremont Main Library and espescially Ms. Heather Donnelly for giving us this opportunity! We hope to see you again at AC Library in the summer!
